Learning how books are made and bound!

On July 5th, BYA’s Summer Mixed Media Team took a trip a few blocks down to Press Press where their team instructor, Bomin, works as a part of the independent publishing initiative. She taught her team how to make spiral bound and perfect bound books. Check out some of their finished products below!

I was amazed by all the diverse supplies there for us at Press Press. But looking at the end result - an actual book that can be used as a notebook or diary - was my favorite part. It’s a product people might actually want to buy and it’s mine. That’s cool!

This was a really unique experience! I want to visit Press Press again during their office hours next Saturday to make more books.

First, the apprentices designed the covers for their books and printed them. Next, they had to cut the cover and inside paper of their book to the right size using the guillotine…

And then, it was time to either spiral bind or perfect bind their books…

Press Press is a publishing initiative that aims to shift and deepen the understanding of voices, identities, and narratives that have been suppressed or misrepresented by the mainstream. Through this experience, studio apprentices were able to learn how to make and bind books, a key tool that has passed on written word throughout our world’s history. They will get a chance to sell these books at Artscape 2019 and see how what they make by hand during the SAP program at BYA can be used to create and build businesses while doing the art they love.
