Fall Class Reflections: Intro to Audio

This fall, BYA taught a new class, Intro to Audio taught by MICA grad student, photographer and filmmaker Noor. In the Audio class, youth learn how to analyze sound that is around them and learn how to recreate it. Youth are working to put their audio together for two projects. Below are two reflections about Intro to Audio form studio apprentices:

This fall at Baltimore Youth Arts a new class was introduced called Introduction to Audio. Marcus and I (his mother) did not hesitate to take the class as he is autistic and takes an interest in different sounds. The class was taught by Noor, who is awesome and easy to work with. She created a chill and relaxed environment for us to learn all about audio and sound. She taught us about the importance of sound; how it's all around us and we can't avoid it. She also introduced the group to using lavalier mics. Through her instructions and videos, we quickly learned how to use them. When we first tested them out, she had everyone in the group record a little something about themselves using the mics. In class, she played our recordings and was able to give us feedback as to how we can use the mics better, which Marcus and I found very helpful. Our favorite part of the class was sharing music that expressed our emotions at the time. It was nice getting to share music and getting a feel of everyone's emotion in the group just by the songs they picked. It also gave us a chance to be introduced to different music that we have not heard before.  - Team Marcus (Wednesday Class)

In audio class one of the first things we learned how to do is to distinguish the layered sounds in interviews and movie clips. Then we jumped right into making our own audio pieces with layered sounds. My favorite part of the class was being in charge of creating the album cover. It was also fun trying to put the sounds in genres. Class was never boring and every week we had something to talk about. I’m looking forward to an audio class part 2. - Ezra (Thursday Class)
